Abstract: Chhattisgarh is a tribal majority state with 32.5% population of tribes. The art and craft, folk songs and dance have been an integral part of their lifestyle. Major tribes are Gonds, Abhuj Maria, Muria, Baiga, etc. Chhattisgarh along with its natural resources is known for various crafts like terracotta, dhokra craft, bamboo, wrought iron etc. The Chhattisgarh Government has been continuously trying to help the tribals evolve and retain their arts and crafts through introducing various haats providing employment, cultural centres etc. This thesis will also aim at retaining the craft culture of Chhattisgarh through a Centre for Tribal Arts at Raipur. The focus of the study is to design a space for encouraging interaction among the visitors and the artists, incorporating the vernacular elements of Chhattisgarh, in planning, aterials and techniques. The study focuses on different types of crafts in Chhattisgarh, their significance. The thesis report showcases detailed design methodology from site analysis to final design proposals.
