dc.description.abstract | Today, an overwhelming majority of the people live in so called dead spaces where there is rarely any response to changing needs and feelings. A severe disconnect is established between the resident and the residence and slowly, but surely, degrades spaces from life-like entities into dull, emotionless boxes. Monotony leads to boredom and to repulsion subsequently. Thus, stems the idea of creating an adaptive, interactive and relatable residential space to make one feel actually at home. It is extremely essential that a space which resonates with people’s thoughts and emotions be built to get a sense of being at ease. One such way of creating a “dynamic & interactive structure” is by integrating mechanics and architecture. With the aim of designing a liveable interactive space for people using kinetic architecture, to help establish a connect with space, emphasis has been placed on the ability to apply kinetic methods to architectural structures to create a completely functional building without losing the sense of space. The work starts off by understanding the background of housing and its general classifications. The site selected for the purpose of this work is located in Hyderabad, Telangana. A preparatory analysis of the by-laws, regulations and design specifications, especially site analysis, connectivity, topography, soil, drainage, noise, climatic analysis, vegetation & visual studies have been carried out to set the context for design. Further, various techniques and methodologies for integrating kinetics and architecture are explored with focus on typologies of actual movement in architecture and control mechanisms (direct, indirect & responsive). Concepts of static and dynamic movement along with key parameters for kinetic architecture have also been analysed. Next, application of the mentioned literature is disused in two parts, kinetic architecture and luxury housing. Specific and relevant sites have been selected for delving into the nuances of the context, design philosophy and technology. Sites like the Moving Landscape, Pool and curtain door have been studied, where kinetic architecture is extensively used to create motion, while sites like Malhar, Lanco and Legend Ocarina have been used to identify architectural principles used in the design of luxury housing communities, including peripherals and utilities.
