Study of space-power relations in architecture: Cultural centre at old port dock, Puducherry

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to study the evolution of power in architectural spaces and understand how it influences the people involved and dedicated to it and the surrounding spaces. The research started by identifying the shift in power and space relation through different eras. In this case, prominent architecture in the globe was taken into account to study the progress in the meaning of the term “power” in the context of architecture. Three distinct relations of power and space were found – 1) Monumentalism - monumental architecture is usually built/commissioned by people of power who want to exert dominance or show off in front of the world. 2) Power in Spatial design/planning – power which is given to the space where there is more confluence or gathering of people through design of movement and spatial planning 3) Power in Culture – power which is embodied by architecture due to its representation of the culture and heritage of the city or local community
