dc.description.abstract | For centuries, public markets have been indispensable places of commercial and social interaction in a community. They act as an incredible platform to showcase the city’s unique character and culture, and bring communities together. It is an opportunity for motivating social cohesion, equitable access to quality food and goods, providing employment opportunities and improving the community’s economic development. Public markets are social, cultural and economic landmarks in the city fabric and play a large role in the functioning, flourishing and creating the image of the city. K.R. Market, locally known as City Market, is one of Bengaluru’s oldest and busiest marketplace which is now proposed to be revitalized. The thesis project, through the redevelopment of K.R. Market, intends to reinforce the importance of a market place in the city fabric and create a holistis public place and commercial experience that respects its context, its users and the existing culture and in a socially accessible manner. The revitalization of the K.R. Market precinct will also restore the value of this timeless landmark in the city of Bengaluru. | en_US |
