This thesis explores the design and implementation of a universal, barrier-free, and sensory-sensitive respite care retreat centre tailored for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and their caregivers. The need for such a facility is driven by the unique challenges faced by CP individuals, which include motor impairments, sensory processing difficulties, and a high dependence on caregiver support. Traditional respite care services often lack comprehensive accessibility and fail to address the specific sensory needs of CP individuals, leading to suboptimal experiences for both the patients and their caregivers. The proposed retreat centre aims to set a new standard in respite care by integrating principles of universal design to ensure accessibility for all users, regardless of physical or cognitive ability. The design will feature barrier-free access throughout the facility, including ramps, wide doorways, and accessible restrooms. Additionally, the centre will incorporate sensory-sensitive design elements, such as adjustable lighting, soundproofing, and tactile pathways, to create a calming and supportive environment that minimizes sensory overload.
