Abstract: | This project explores the historical and ongoing co-existence of Abrahamic religions (Islam, Christianity, Judaism) with the native faiths of Kerala's coast, brought together through trade routes. It delves particularly into the rich but diminished Jewish heritage of the region. Through extensive research encompassing historical texts, archival data, and scholarly works, the project seeks a deeper understanding of these religions' origins and historical interactions. The centrepiece of this project is the design for an interpretation centre housed within Kottayil Kovilakam, strategically situated amidst a masjid, a historical synagogue, a temple, and a chapel in close proximity. This unique location, situated within the environs of the ancient port city of Muziris (present-day Kodungallur), further underscores the harmonious co-existence of these faiths for centuries. The centre itself aims to educate visitors through open-ended interpretation about the arrival and continuing history of Abrahamic religions in Kerala, fostering a deeper understanding of their shared heritage. The design will be a striking departure from the prevalent tropical architectural style in Kerala. Employing principles of post and meta modernism alongside deconstructivism, the centre will break away from architectural normalcy. This bold choice reflects the project's aim to challenge conventional perspectives on religious spaces and celebrate the dynamic confluence of cultures in Kerala. |
