Abstract: | The thesis titled ‘Re-Imagining Railscapes as Rail Heritage Experiential Hub’ explores the potential of transforming rail scapes into a vibrant hub of rail heritage experiences. Kolkata, a city steeped in history and culture, boasts a rich railway heritage that is often overlooked amidst its bustling urban landscape. This thesis seeks to revitalize and celebrate this heritage by proposing innovative interventions that blend historical preservation with contemporary experiential design. The research delves into the historical significance of Kolkata's railway infrastructure, tracing its evolution from the colonial era to the present day. By analysing existing railscapes, architectural elements, and cultural narratives, the thesis identifies opportunities for adaptive reuse and revitalization. Central to the thesis is the concept of creating a Rail Heritage Experiential Hub, envisioned as a dynamic destination that engages visitors through immersive experiences, interactive exhibits, and cultural programming. The hub serves as a catalyst for fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Kolkata's railway heritage while also addressing contemporary urban challenges such as place-making, cultural preservation, and sustainable tourism. Through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates architecture, urban design, heritage conservation, and experiential storytelling, the thesis proposes design interventions that celebrate the unique character of Kolkata's railscapes. These interventions include integration of technology for interactive exhibits, and development of thematic trails that showcase diverse aspects of railway heritage. The thesis aims to achieve an immersive experience on the evolution of Indian Railways through the effective use of existing defunct railscapes of Kolkata, (Belur: Site), promoting heritage tourism and foster a renewed sense of pride in the country’s rich railway heritage. |
