This study examines the phenomenon of vacant houses in urban Kerala, exploring its causes, consequences, and potential solutions. With approximately 11% of houses in Kerala lying vacant, according to 2011 Census data, this issue has significant environmental, economic, and social implications but are currently being neglected by the government and people. The trend is largely driven by non-resident Keralites building homes in their hometowns, often for nostalgic reasons, while they reside elsewhere for work. The research investigates the impact of these vacant houses on urban areas, including resource wastage, energy inefficiency. It also explores the potential for sustainable finance solutions and community-centered housing initiatives to address this issue. By analyzing the Kerala context, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the complex relationships between housing, migration, and urban development. The findings of this research could inform policy recommendations for the government, financial institutions, and real estate developers to promote more sustainable and equitable housing solutions in urban Kerala. Ultimately, this study seeks to shed light on the pressing issue of vacant houses in Kerala’s urban areas and contribute to the development of effective strategies to mitigate its negative impacts.
