The redevelopment of the historic Sakthan Thampuran Vegetable & Fish Market in Thrissur addresses the urgent need to resolve issues of congestion, poor infrastructure, encroachments, and inadequate sanitation caused by rapid urbanization. As a live project under the Thrissur Master Plan 2039, the proposal aims to modernize the market by enhancing infrastructure, promoting pedestrian circulation, and improving user safety and amenities. Informed by case studies like Margao Market (Goa), Ernakulam Market (Kochi), Santa Caterina Market (Barcelona), and Taipei Flower Market (Taiwan), the design incorporates efficient spatial organization, sustainable practices, and climate-responsive architecture. Key features include dedicated pedestrian pathways, organized vendor zoning, laterite walls and terracotta-tiled roofs for thermal comfort, rainwater harvesting, aeroponics, and improved waste management. The proposal emphasizes cultural identity by integrating traditional Kerala aesthetics with modern construction techniques, ultimately fostering social cohesion and economic growth. The project sets a precedent for inclusive, sustainable, and resilient market redevelopment in Kerala.
