Tribal cultural and heritage center, Jharkhand

Abstract

India is home to a large number of tribes with population of about 70 million. Currently there are between 258 to 540 scheduled tribe communities. The strength of these communities varies from 31 people of jarwa tribe to over 7 million gonds. In terms of geographical distribution about 55% of tribal population lived in central India, 28% in west, 12% in North-East India, 4% in South India and 1% elsewhere. The ancient culture and tradition are yet not researched to a great extent. Although the preservation of culture doesn’t mean that they should not be educated. They must be educated to know the importance of this rich and old culture and the importance of contribution in evolution and development of new world with their own culture and tradition. Their art and architecture is so rich and diverse, that people are incorporating their ideas in contemporary art and architecture. The study of tribal art and architecture will form a base structure for thesis project. Design of elevation and interior spaces can be well understand by studying the architectural behavior of the tribal hutments. Tribal architecture will be helpful in development of plans, clusters, and site planning and design process.
