Abstract

People with disability needs environment that is accessible to them. They seek for a place where they can live, work and play without any barriers. The main purpose of this research is to study on the facilities and criteria of spaces required for disabled people‟s training center at Vocational Rehabilitation/Training center. Persons with disabilities (PWD) are entitled to exercise their civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights on an equal basis with others. Unfortunately they are treated as a separate entity. However, disabled people are normally considered a financial burden and, due to poverty, no special provision is provided for them. This happens to because of lack of independent living nature and social environment. The Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Program/Center helps people who have physical or mental disabilities prepare for, find or keep employment. A NGO named Adarsh Path has proposed a VR center in Jharkhand for disabled. Considering the disability (more than a social issue) as a serious issue, my focus is on accessible and disabled friendly architecture. A VRC usually consist spaces like workshops, classrooms, physiotherapy and occupational therapy unit, hostel, mess, staff quarter. These spaces require special addition for the people with disability which is prime concern for the independent living environment.
