India is the home for maximum no. of slum dwellers in the world. A total of 29% of population living in Chennai belongs to slum as per 2011 census. The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board was formed by Tamil Nadu Slum Areas (Improvement & Clearance) Act 1971. The main function of this board is to eradicate the slum and provide hygienic tenements in Tamil Nadu. Its various projects include tenements in Ezhil Nagar, Perumbakkam, Kotturpuram, Adyar Sholinganallur. K P Park, Nalla Thaneer odai kuppam, Kilkathipur, Kancheepuram. Vilankurichi, Coimbatore, Madurai and many more places. But the quality of livelihood provided there is lacking the capacity to provide a healthy, social and comfortable environment. The main aim of this project is to provide quality spaces for the people. This is achieved by providing privacy, proper sunlight and ventilation, flexibility of spaces and assigning social spaces at different levels. Approached this by good understanding of the context, analysing it in various aspects and a clear view of the people lives before and after moving to the housing board, as what they lack after moving? why some people tend to rent their house here and move to some other place? Then made case studies of some well-designed housing projects, schemes and naturally grown out housings with congestion, which is but working efficiently. The aim of the project is to provide a better living environment without losing their early happiness in their life.
