Due to modernization, catering to the present needs and lifestyle of the people, the historic core of Indian cities are transforming rapidly developing risk of loss of its identity and inherent character. These transformations are triggered with high vehicular movement, increase in commercial activities, boost in the economy, increase in footfall, increase in the number of visitors to the monuments etc. within the core. These city cores are not been planned to take that pressure and these transformations are putting a load on infrastructure and character of the area. Alwar city has a very strong historical background. The city takes pride in its history, culture and wildlife. The city developed along the Aravalli hills and as a commercial centre around Hope circus which is the heart of Alwar city. At present, it became the inner city core. Alwar city has unique identities which distinguish it from all other cities based on some key aspects; its history, monuments and architectural splendour, food, bazaars, festivals etc. But the historic core of Alwar city is transforming rapidly developing risk of loss of its identity and inherent characteristics. The city core is facing a huge pressure of infrastructure and losing its character and tourists. The various layer is added on the heritage which will be an identity loss for the precinct. This thesis examines ways of retaining the identity and character of the historic core of cities.en_US
