Architecture needs to embody modernity to an extent that it is relative to the place. It should create a link between modernist abstractionism and urban and architectural contexts of a place so as to ensure that the identity and integrity of that place remains intact. It is important to understand that modernity in architecture can be maintained even if the design is in accordance to its context. Local construction techniques and materials in association with a modernist approach to designing has the ability to create highly successful context-based design. These designs are not only environmentally viable, they have the capability to generate emotions in people and help them connect better with the architecture and environment of a place. Designing in context has never been more important as the advent of modernism has led to shift in focus from what is actually important and viable in a place. Contemporary design techniques in combination or relation with its context can help create iconic, memorable as well as grounded architecture. In a place like Dehradun which is amidst rapid urbanization, it is not possible to control the drastic growth in population as well as growth in its construction industry. However, if the local identity and integrity of a place is secured then the negative impact on construction and be considerably reduced. This thesis design project deals with designing a retreat resort that engulfs itself in the natural setting and site context. Developing a retreat resort that uses contextual design elements to create a unique guest experienceen_US
