Abstract:
The transgender community in India faces heavy social prejudice and heteronormative behavior even after being a recognized gender (The Supreme Court judgment in 2014 recognising transgender persons as the third gender). In a landmark step (24 Aug 2022) - some basic services like inclusive and composite healthcare for the trans-community were granted, under Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY. In response to the pressing need for inclusive environments that address the unique challenges faced by the transgender community, this project seeks to redefine architectural paradigms.
The core objectives of this thesis revolve around creating a safe, empowering, and holistic space that fosters physical, mental, and emotional well-being for transgender individuals. The architectural design incorporates elements that surpass traditional gender norms, offering spaces that celebrate diversity, affirm individual identities, and encourage personal growth. This Transcendence Hub (comprehensive growth center) is conceived not merely as a physical structure but as a transformative force in the lives of those it serves. Facilities include wellness and mental health support spaces, communal areas, vocational training centers, and transitional housing/hostel units. These elements are meticulously integrated to cater health and wellbeing, promote skill development, community engagement, and a sense of belonging. This project would be taken up under the National Health Authority anchored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
