Abstract:
With the pace of urbanization, periurban areas experience enormous changes due to extension of urban activities & over time, the peri-urban areas get converted to urban. But this process of conversion of peri-urban area into urban is not rational and leads to haphazard growth in peri-urban areas. The purpose of the study is to prepare a framework for incorporation of peri-urban areas around Chandigarh municipality into municipal limit. This has been done by using multi-criteria decision making approach, Analytical Hierarchy process (AHP). GIS has been used to study the Spatio temporal patterns of land use dynamics in urban & peri-urban areas of Chandigarh city. The study focussed on five villages surrounding Chandigarh city namely Kaimbwala, Sarangpur, Dhanas, Raipur Khurd, and Raipur Kalan. Conclusion of the research will help planners and policy makers to know which village should come first into the urban fold. This process would help in making proper plan for peri-urban areas & would also help in providing the basic infrastructure (water supply, sewerage, sanitation, solid waste & disposal etc) to make it desirable & mutually beneficial to both rural & urban areas. As a result the incorporated peri- urban areas do not disturb the planned land use of Mother city.
