dc.description.abstract This paper aims on exploring the potential of architecture in providing healing to human body which suffers stress at continuous intervals at the time of treatment due to innumerable reasons. Cancer patients are usually facing stress, anxiety and depression which results in worsening of their immunity system. In order to enhance patient’s immune system, an environment needs to be designed which is much more comforting and relaxing to them. In such case a patient centred environment with physical, emotional and psychological comfort to the patients. This kind of environment will promote patient’s healing and well-being. Therapeutic environment needs to be designed in a manner that it creates healing to the patients Traditionally major cancer hospitals have been intended to render the services of medical treatment in the most efficient and effective manner. It was observed that people suffered from stress, anxiety and depression whereas modern hospitals were noisy and had institutionalized environment with emphasis on diagnosing, curing and treatment. However, there are signs that things are changing in the field of healthcare design. Gradually medical professionals and healthcare administrators are becoming conscious for the necessity of ‘therapeutic environments’ which will be able to support the staff and family. “Cancer” is one of those diseases that people are terrorized with and with the diagnose of cancer people usually leave the hope to live. Also design of the hospital environment could not offer them the support they needed, neither regarding information needs, nor in terms of the built environment. Hence an environment needs to be created which has healing potential in terms of spatial experience, interiors relieving patients and visitors stress thereby conveying the value of therapeutic environment. A cancer hospital will be proposed in the campus of New Delhi Holy family society having healing environs embedded within it.
