Due to rapid urbanization, slum are inevitably growing on a rapid scale. It is very
common for a developing country like India to see such a huge change gradually. The
main issue of the planned informal settlements are the new typology of four storied
building blocks without any open spaces, common congregation spaces which affect their
daily routines. The appearance of slums may be seen as a byproduct in the process of
urbanization in a developing country like India. The project seeks to bring out a
conceptual understanding of a slum through an Indian social perspective. The factors
responsible for the growth of slums have been highlighted by interrogating the
characteristic features there of which include infrastructure, housing and health. It also
seeks to uncover the problems of slum dwellers at the ground level. This study has made
use of the previous studies done on slums in various Indian states and sought to draw out
a generalisation through the analysis of the previous studies in this regard. It came out
that the slum development policies in India need a revival so that the issues like social
stigma and cultural problems could be sorted out. The factors for slum growth are almost
same for all the urban states of the country with the slum dwellers again facing similar
socio-economic problems. The following project would lead us to the main objectives of
their formation and implementation, catering their major aspects of life.
Therefore, some of the alternatives are found out to eradicate and reduce their major
issues and help them to lead a prosperous, healthy and standard way of living in all the
aspects. |
