Abstract:
Area selected for thesis was the second capital of Kalachuri dynasty (1000 A.D. to 1700 A.D.) of
Dakshina Kosala/ present Chhattisgarh under the most dominant king Ratandeva –II. Dynasty of
kalachuri’s had upgraded dakshina kosala (present Chhattisgarh) in the area construction,
management, economy, and culture and surface water management system through Taria’s.
Purpose of study: the site represent various elements and characteristics of cultural landscape
and its well-planned water management system to save the single drop of rain water from surface
runoff; which is also supported by the geology of the area, lies in intracartenic zone of
Chhattisgarh evidently proves the large occurrence of these historic Taria’s.
This study investigate the ancient water management system of ruling dynasty in the study area
and document typical features and components of taria’s (water tanks) as they are typical cultural
identity of the region constructed by ruler and continued by the generations. To identify the
present need of conservation as they were important part of historic management system and
discuss the current scenario of maintenance.
Purpose of study to provide conservation strategy for the taria’s (water tanks) and water
management system. And investigate cultural landscape elements of the area.
Although scholars has been discussed about the construction style, economy, iconography,
Numismatics, epigraphy, anthropological aspects of kalachuri’s but the aspect of their efficient
water management system is still untouched. So this study provide the base work for this kind of
research in the field of area conservation.
Methodology: methodology of this thesis tends to 3 levels as regional to site to Talab’s (water
tanks), which will be theoretically act as model approach for conservation of other Talab’s (water
tanks) and water management system itself.
