adhya Pradesh being centrally located in the lap of vast plateau acted as a meeting point for many rulers resulting in a very contrasting character. It has most aesthetic architectures, splendid natural scenery and magnificent places. The undulating terrain around the hill sides and dense forest of Vindhya and Satpura ranges and rivers like Chambal, Narmada and Betwa acted as the natural protectors for the forts of this region. Forts are the structures which were initially built for defense (military base/ depots/ barracks), habitation and protection from the enemies but which later became a symbol of prestige for the rulers. During emergencies, Forts served as a protected place for women and elderly of royal households. According to the geography of the land, forts are classified as- hill fort, land fort, forest fort, water fort, desert fort, earth fort and mixed fort.
