“Molela terracotta” is an art form which has been passed from generation to
generation, getting evolved with generation. Terracotta is a material which is used in
construction as well as decorative arts since ancient times in many of the cultures all
around the world. The word terracotta can be translated as ‘Baked earth’ in English. It
is formed from the natural clay which is why it has the characteristic reddish-brown
colour. Molela is internationally known: mainly for its production of brightly painted
terracotta plaques and figures of the local deities and gods. These clay gods are
installed in the temple of towns and villages. Deities and gods often depicted riding on
a horse, a bull, a pig, a dog and even a crocodile. Molela “peasant potters” descend
from a tradition handed down, within families for over 5000 years and are today still
satisfying a need for functional( water pots, cooking vessels etc.), decorative as well
as religious ceramics and out of all that, the hollow votive plaques is the most famous
artistry. The art form generally depicts rural village scenes and charming visual
narratives.
The inherent charm of these terracotta sculptures attract a plethora of buyers from
different places but the demands for these plaques tend to be seasonal. Vessels and
statues of the lord are required during the time of harvest or festive seasons.
Owing to its great significance and uniqueness, Government of Rajasthan has
proposed a plan to design a craft centre to promote the art and create employment
opportunities. To implement the plan, a community leaning space, a haat (market
place) and a workshop, etc. is to be designed.
