dc.description.abstract Heritage enriched areas are quintessential and an integral component of the city’s fabric contributing to the image of the city. The area not only consisting of a ravishing paradigm of traditional architecture but also creates a sense of place, character and pride to its residents. Infrastructure Development projects over the last three decades have seen major subsidence in value within these historic towns to such an extent that the evidence of historic relics is often defaced or being obliterated forever. Architectural heritage sites are not often looked after and adequately maintained amongst which most remain unprotected until the date in the country. The heritage has a unique relationship with the natural environments, which prompted the development of numerous strategies that do not address the idea of protecting one's heritage yet rather by implication through broad approaches. This ultimately leaves a much important cultural void in many policies that seek to provide a holistic vision of the city. The current skyrocketing urbanization trends cause irreversible damage and ultimate loss to a city. There are many upcoming and ongoing projects happening in Kochi. Over last decades, Kochi faces a rapid urbanization, major projects like smart city Cochin limited in with both ABD and Pan City developments projects smart city Kochi (cybercity) and ongoing projects like Kochi metro. It is noted that state protected heritage monuments in Kerala do not have proper guidelines due to this the heritage value and awareness of Kochi is decreasing. As a result it is very much important to balance heritage and urban development for that there should be strategies and polices to balance urban development and heritage conservation. The aim of the project is to bridge the gap between urban development regulations and heritage conservation a Case of Kochi. The study does not deal with the urban design issues and design guidelines for the individual buildings and financial aspects. en_US
