dc.description.abstract Due to globalisation and modernisation, cities are undergoing rapid transformation. The process of urbanisation and an increase in population in cities push the city centres into congestion and loss of identity by neglecting the heritage structures and historic character. Traditional residential areas in cities forms an important characteristic of the urban fabric. Transformation in these areas affects the existing tradition and culture which needs to be preserved to keep the identity intact. Bengaluru has a unique history, identity and culture. The city has undergone rapid change in terms of its social, economic as well as spatial character. This results in the transformation of the traditional areas to fit into the cosmopolitan culture. The topic would be explored by studying various theories and concepts/ aspects involved in the transformation of traditional areas through literature studies as well as case study. Ulsoor (which is also known as Halasuru) is an old neighbourhood and a traditional residential area in Bengaluru, located in the central part of the city which dates back to 1500s. It is well known for the Ulsoor Lake and numerous temples. Currently the area has a dense urban fabric with new forms of built typology and high-rise buildings. The area has transformed tremendously over the years. This thesis examines the ways to deal with loss of identity and character of traditional residential areas and to enhance the urban identity of these areas that are undergoing socio-spatial transformation. It focuses on transformation of traditional residential areas in terms of social and spatial aspects. It explores the historic and religious context of the area with respect to the morphological change. en_US
