Planning for affordable rental housing

Abstract

The most fundamental human need is a place to live. Since the first five-year plan, it has been one of the top priorities of Indian government. To encourage housing, the government has offered a number of financial ncentives. Numerous housing-related initiatives have been started since independence, but the goal of oviding housing for all has not yet been reached. India has experienced a tremendous movement from rural to urban areas as a result of urbanisation. Finding appropriate rental living space for oneself within the right udget is a very basic but crucial problem that working professionals and labourers who relocate from small towns and rural parts of the country for employment and better opportunities encounter. This can be attributed to the lack of adequate housing infrastructure in urban areas, which has led to an increase in the number of slums, especially in industrial areas. This study tries to find possible reasons for the housing problem in industrial areas through a case of Pithampur which is an industrial hub situated near Indore, the business capital of Madhya Pradesh, India. Affordable rental housing is an idea to address the housing crisis, which has great potential for all parties involved. Affordable Rental Housing focuses on offering less expensive housing options to immigrants and workers who want to rent houses in the vicinity of their newer workplaces. Working migrants can benefit from the availability of affordable rental housing near their workplaces, which can save them time and money on commuting. Developers can benefit from tax incentives and a dedicated fund to support their projects. The government can benefit from the creation of a more inclusive and sustainable urban environment. By including various stakeholders in the financial and administrative elements of the rental housing industry, and providing proposals like working men’s hostels through CSR, cooperative rental housing, fiscal incentives etc., this research seeks to offer solutions to protect the interests of working migrants by giving them access to basic living standards
