dc.description.abstract This thesis deals with a mill precinct named ‘India United mills 2 & 3’ located in Girangaon, in the heart of South Bombay. The project has been proposed to develop as a textile museum to act as a reminder of the mill culture of Bombay. The thesis tries to analyse the actual need of the proposal and upon analysis, intends to create a retrospective and cultural centre on the site. The thesis contains questions to why such a proposal has been made and how the design has been conceptualised on the basis of strong concepts that respect the amalgamation of the new in the existing fabric. The design ideology throughout has been to create a site that regards the industrial heritage of Bombay. The project is one the mills that once dotted the landscapes of South Bombay and were the soul of the city. They are an epitome of the cultural heritage of Bombay and an industrial architecture paradigm. It is the need of today to conserve such structures and design in a way that helps the architecture sustain among the contemporaneity of the city. One significant approach to design includes creation of a unique but unified architectural character. en_US
