Evaluating the impact of jaga mission on slum liveability: a case of Bhubaneswar

Abstract

Urbanization has become a defining feature of contemporary societies, reshaping the landscapes of cities and impacting the lives of millions worldwide. As urban areas grapple with the challenges of rapid population growth and infrastructure demands, the concept of livability emerges as a critical measure of urban success. This thesis delves into the intricate dynamics of slum livability, focusing on Bhubaneswar, the capital of the Indian state of Odisha. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of Jaga missions on slum livability in Bhubaneswar, with a particular emphasis on the experiences of its residents. Through a comprehensive analysis, this research aims to highlight both the improvements and challenges faced by slum dwellers as a result of urban development initiatives. The objectives of this study are meticulously crafted to align with the overarching aim, providing a structured framework for inquiry. Firstly, the study seeks to identify and measure the different dimensions of slum livability within Bhubaneswar, encompassing factors such as access to basic amenities, housing quality, public transportation, green spaces, and safety. Secondly, it endeavors to assess the impact of the Jaga Mission, launched by the Government of Odisha, on the living conditions of slum dwellers. Through comparative research design and data collection methods including surveys, interviews, and observations, the study aims to evaluate housing conditions, access to basic amenities, sanitation, and overall well-being among beneficiaries of the Jaga Mission. Finally, the study aims to formulate recommendations aimed at improving the implementation of the mission, addressing challenges, and enhancing its effectiveness in achieving its stated goals. Through qualitative research methods and stakeholder engagement, the study seeks to derive insights that can inform policy and urban planning decisions. The research design encompasses a multi-faceted approach, beginning with an extensive background study and literature review to establish foundational knowledge. The selection of Bhubaneswar as the study area is informed by its significance as a regional hub and its commitment to urban development initiatives. Data collection methods include both quantitative and qualitative approaches, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of urban livability dimensions and the impact of the Jaga Mission. Data analysis techniques range from descriptive statistics to thematic analysis, enabling the synthesis of findings and the identification of key trends and patterns. The formulation of recommendations serves as the culmination of the study, offering actionable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders invested in the sustainable development of Bhubaneswar. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the evolving discourse on slum livability, offering valuable insights into the intersection of urban development initiatives and the lived experiences of city residents. By critically evaluating the impact of the Jaga Mission and offering recommendations for improvement, this study seeks to pave the way for more inclusive, sustainable, and livable slum environments in Bhubaneswar and beyond.
