In the wake of recent calamities impacting Kerala's tourism sector, the urgency to pivot towards eco-friendly tourism has never been more apparent. Disasters like floods and environmental vulnerabilities underscore the fragility of conventional tourism practices and highlight the need for sustainable alternatives. This thesis explores eco-friendly tourism in Nilambur, strategically positioned within Kerala's serene landscapes.
Kerala's declining agricultural contributions necessitate new economic avenues. Tourism, a vital source of foreign currency and employment, is aggressively promoted. However, existing facilities for tourists, both foreign and domestic, are inadequate. Nilambur, known for its golden teak, is an unexplored tourist spot near the Nilgiri biosphere and the Bangalore-Calicut national highway, a route frequented by thousands of tourists
heading to destinations like Ooty and Kodaikanal. Improving tourism infrastructure in Nilambur is essential to attract more visitors.
Nilambur boasts lush landscapes and biodiversity. Located near the Western Ghats, it is renowned for dense forests and diverse flora and fauna. The Cannoli Plot, the world's oldest teak plantation, is a historic landmark showcasing centuries of forest conservation. The Chaliyar River sustains vibrant habitats, attracting nature enthusiasts and researchers. The project recognizes eco-tourism's transformative potential, offering sustainable, naturecentric experiences that harmonize with Nilambur's tourism ethos. Eco-tourism signifies a
commitment to preserving ecological integrity, immersing visitors in unpolluted natural areas, and fostering an intimate connection with Nilambur's ecosystems. This study aims to tap into Nilambur's tourism potential, demonstrating how recreational spaces, canopy trails, and nature interpretive centers can enhance visitor experiences, stimulate economic revival, create employment opportunities, and amplify Kerala's allure as a
tourist destination. The ultimate goal is to conceptualize a sustainable tourism model that celebrates Nilambur's natural splendor and epitomizes responsible tourism practices, balancing ecological preservation with economic prosperity. |
