Abstract:
Urban expansion, a complex and multidimensional process, often deviates from the paths envisioned in official plans, leading to unplanned growth, infrastructural strain, and environmental challenges. This study, titled "Understanding the Spatio- Temporal Dimensions of Urban Expansion," aims to analyse the causes of
deviations in urban growth patterns from planned expansions. Using the case study of Varanasi, India - a city experiencing rapid organic and planned urbanization-the research identifies and spatially maps key factors driving unplanned urban expansion.
The study begins by defining robust site selection criteria based on factors like urban growth dynamics, data availability, and representativeness. Following a comparison of potential cities, Varanasi was selected for its historical significance, dynamic growth, and rich planning documentation. The analysis integrates both
secondary sources (such as master plans, satellite imagery, and literature) and primary data collection (through structured surveys) to understand the forces influencing urban expansion.
Push and pull factors such as economic opportunities, transportation infrastructure, social networks, land affordability, and aspirations for property ownership are categorized and analyzed in detail. Spatial patterns of expansion are visualized through geospatial analysis, and fractal dimension techniques are applied to
quantify urban sprawl. A comparative analysis between the planned growth trajectories outlined in Varanasi’s Master Plans (2011 and 2031) and the actual expansion patterns reveals critical deviations and their underlying drivers. The findings aim to bridge the gap between the planning frameworks and real world urban growth processes. They offer recommendations to better align future boundary delineation and planning strategies with the socio-economic realities shaping cities today. Ultimately, this research contributes to creating more
