dc.description.abstract This thesis focuses on preserving and supporting the rich tradition of Paithani handloom weaving- a craft deeply rooted in Paithan’s cultural identity but now facing serious challenges. The aim of this thesis is to create a dedicated space that not only preserves this heritage but also empowers the local community socially and economically. By linking Paithani weaving with tourism and cultural engagement, the project seeks to provide sustainable growth opportunities for the artisans. The design thoughtfully integrates various functional spaces to support the weaving community while promoting cultural tourism. Central to the proposal are the weaving workshops, which offer artisans well-equipped and comfortable workspaces. A child care center addresses the needs of working weavers with young children, while a design and training block fosters skill development, innovation, and knowledge exchange. To accommodate students and trainees from outside the area, a hostel is provided, encouraging a collaborative learning environment. Commercial and retail spaces are designed to showcase and sell handloom products directly to visitors, supporting artisans’ livelihoods. An exhibition space raises awareness about the Paithani craft, educating locals and tourists alike. To attract visitors, the site includes a scenic viewpoint and restaurant on the banks of the Godavari River near Jayakwadi Dam, providing a serene and engaging tourism experience. Comfortable guest accommodations enable visitors to stay overnight and immerse themselves in local culture. Architecturally, the design emphasizes a user-friendly environment that balances work and community life, utilizing local materials, climate-responsive strategies, and spatial arrangements inspired by traditional lifestyles to create a strong connection to the context. Ultimately, this project aims to build a vibrant cultural platform that preserves Paithani weaving heritage, supports the artisans’ everyday lives, and fosters economic growth through tourism. It aspires to serve as a model for other craft-based communities in India facing similar challenges.
