Abstract:
Public libraries are resources for education, information, and community engagement. They offer access to books, research materials, and a space for learning and connecting. They have evolved to meet community needs, offering diverse programs and services. Libraries have always been a resource of information exchange, and they will continue to be. However, the digital world and new technologies challenge the traditional role of libraries, forcing them to transform from book repositories to dynamic centres of learning
and innovation. As technology advances and digital access demands rise, libraries face challenges in providing modern technology services. In a fastmoving world, where people interact less and are more distracted through
technology, books offer an insight into knowledge and interaction for all age groups. According to a 2021 statistic of World Reading Habits, in Asia, India, Thailand and China led in reading hours per week. In present-day, public libraries in India are repositories of information that lack digital literacy and social connection along with space constraints. The concept of city-scale public libraries is not yet explored. Existing libraries lack the environment and enthusiasm that attract visitors.
The project aims for a new building proposal for the existing historical building – Allahabad Public Library – where the integration of modern technologies will enhance user experience and encourage collaboration, creativity, and lifelong learning. Prayagraj (Allahabad) is a well-known centre of education and is one
of the largest cities in Uttar Pradesh, India. The Allahabad Public Library located within the sprawling campus of Chandra Shekhar Azad Park (Company Bagh) is getting a mega revamp under the Prayagraj Smart City
Initiative. The project has two initiatives: restoration & conservation of Allahabad Public Library and implementation of a digital library. This thesis project designs a new building (public library) for Allahabad Public
Library that connects information and physical interaction among various age groups. The site is located in the hub of the city and is accessible to users of all age groups; the location makes it easier to explore the place. The design is flexible to cater modern needs and future modes of communication. It creates a welcoming space and a sense of belonging. By positioning the library as a forward-thinking institution, it can empower individuals to thrive in a changing world.
