Abstract:
"Fishing Harbour Revitalization: Socio-Cultural Integration of Chellanam Harbour" presents a comprehensive architectural intervention aimed at transforming the Chellanam Fishing Harbour in Kochi, Kerala, into a modern, resilient, and community-centric facility. This initiative emerges in response to the structural inadequacies and socio-environmental vulnerabilities currently affecting one of the few remaining country boat harbours in the Ernakulam district. Drawing inspiration from the historic Indo-Norwegian Project, the study envisions a harbour that harmonizes technological advancement with the vernacular traditions of the fishing community. The proposal emphasizes infrastructure modernization, improved spatial organization for fishing operations, and enhanced community participation through multifunctional spaces that support livelihood, training, and passive income opportunities. A detailed analysis of regional issues—including flooding, coastal erosion, and degraded water systems—underscores the need for integrated planning and sustainable design. Site studies, live case analyses, and conceptual developments inform the architectural strategy, ensuring functionality, ecological balance, and cultural relevance. Ultimately, this project aims to reimagine the fishing harbour as a resilient social infrastructure that not only bolsters the local economy but also reinforces the cultural identity and environmental stewardship of the Chellanam community. 6
