The art ecosystem: art and cultural centre at sultan garhi New Delhi/

Abstract

In a rapidly urbanizing society, there is a growing demand for cultural spaces that nurture creativity, support artistic exchange, and empower local communities. This thesis proposes the design of an Art and Cultural Centre in Vasant Kunj, Delhi — envisioned as a vibrant, self-sustaining cultural hub that brings together contemporary and traditional art forms within an integrated architectural and natural setting. The project aims to create a dynamic environment where artists, artisans, and visitors can collaborate, learn, and engage. It features flexible indoor and outdoor exhibition zones, galleries, an auditorium, an open-air theatre, a library, and spaces for workshops and performances. An artisan village further support emerging artists and local craftspeople by offering platforms for production, training, and public interaction. The design strategy is rooted in the relationship between built and unbuilt spaces. By working with the site's natural contours, the proposal creates varied experiential levels that enhance spatial flow, openness, and user connectivity. Public space is treated as a vital component — not peripheral — inviting visitors to engage with art casually and meaningfully in both structured and spontaneous ways. The project is developed around a central plaza, which serves as the main area for public activity. This high interaction zone can be used in various ways-as a place for exhibition, functions, day and night markets, food courts, festivals, etc. The project also focuses on sensory integration — making the arts accessible and immersive through tactile materials, varied lighting, soundscapes, and interactive installations. The Centre encourages exploration and participation, offering an inclusive and multi-sensory experience for users of all ages and backgrounds. By uniting artistic production, exhibition, and education within one ecosystem, the Centre aspires to become a landmark of cultural engagement in Delhi. It proposes a space that is people-centric and multifunctional, rooted in collaboration, accessibility, and nature.
