Business schoolsare higher level education institutions which impart education at various
levels. The major areas include accounting, finance, economics, administration, marketing,
etc. Today the managers from such institutes are spread all around the world, responsible for
a major change in the nation’s economy. This can be seen here (India) where the economy
was suffering after the independence and need of such managers was indeed. For this purpose
the Indian Planning Commission in 1959 took the initiative and setup two business school in
the beginning namely ‘Indian Institute of Management’. The first institute was made at
Calcutta in 1961 and then Ahmedabad in the following month. Presently we have 19 IIMs
and there are more to come in the coming years.
Here the report deals with the latest IIM at Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India.
The institute was setup by ministry in 2010 which provides education in many areas. The
land area allocated about200 acres and lies in the fringes of Naya Raipur. The institute design
has been taken as an opportunity and designed with the present needs. For this purpose the
scope of work in the entire thesis has been defined in the beginning so that the selected area
could be designed and justified properly. The study focuses on three areas namely site
planning, main building and management development center design.
The main concern was
retaining, exhibiting and utilizing the exiting. The site had contours which form a very gentle
slope about 0.5-1.5% which proved beneficial for fast development and landscape. The site
has two water bodies, one small school, few dwellings of villagers, some trees and the most
important is foundation stone of Naya Raipur. All of them kept intact and utilized in way that
they become the part of IIM. The foundation stone lies between main building and
management development center. The area called as Naya Raipur plaza which acts as the
main area for interaction and activity. The main building designed on the concept of
‘Hinduism’ and ‘Tribal’ culture of Chhattisgarh whereas the management development center
is designed as ‘street’ system and ‘space hierarchy’.Both the buildings are designed as
integrated blocks which are provided with a number of landscape courtyards. The overall
design focuses on the inside and outside life of these building and promotes education at
various scales.
