dc.description.sponsorship The inception of this thesis started with a natural however man made problem faced by the Jodhpur city, Rajasthan. It is the problem of urban flooding experienced by the city during the months of monsoon. Even after a short spell of rainfall, many places in the city gets flooded and thus causing obstruction to the routine life of the people. Jodhpur city is surrounded by large hillocks in north and river Jojari lies in the southwest, geographical location of the city is such that a large hillock drains water into the core city but the problem of urban flooding was not there since forever. When the city of Jodhpur was founded by the kings, a network of canals, talabs, step wells and lakes was planned to harvest rain water to meet the water demand throughout the year, but after the introduction of piped water supply people lost this traditional wisdom and these traditional sources were deserted or encroached due to urbanisation and mining activities and the canals which used to drain storm water from the city to the lakes were paralysed. Now the city faces urban flooding and water logging issues even after a short spell of rain. The natural flows of rain water have been blocked which has resulted in rapid increase in ground water table in the core city. The aim of this thesis is to manage the rainwater of the city and make the city free from urban flooding and water logging issues. An analysis of the natural slope and the natural built environment is carried out in the study to identify the best possible management techniques to channelize and sustainably use the storm water during the months of monsoon. The final outcome of the thesis is to delineate the city into major drainage zones and channelize the rainwater into its respective zones to make the city free from urban flooding. en_US
