Abstract:
Due to modernization, catering to the present needs and lifestyle of the people, historic core of Indian cities are transforming rapidly developing risk of loss of its identity and inherent character. These transformations are triggered due to new advents like metro routes and metro station etc. within the core. Such inserts induces increase in commercial activities, boost in the economy, increase in footfall, increase in number of visitors to the monuments etc.
Indore city has a very strong historical background. City takes pride in its history, culture and trade and is well known in central India. The city developed along Kahn river bank and as a commercial centre around Rajwada palace which is the heart of
Indore city. At present it became the inner city core. Indore city has unique identities which distinguish it from all other cities based on some key aspects; its history, monuments and architectural splendor, food, bazaars, festivals etc.
But historic core of Indore city is transforming rapidly developing risk of loss of its identity and inherent characteristics. Underground metro route is planned through the core and its station is going to come up at Rajwada chawk, which is the focal point of the core. This will become a new entrance to the core and a very high footfall is expected which will likely to trigger transformations in future.
This thesis examines ways of retaining identity and character of historic core of
cities.
