Abstract:
In the Indian history, cities has experienced tremendous change caused by rapid urbanization and tourism growth. It is recognized that changes is inevitable in evolving historic urban cities. And it is essential to consider and manage changes without compromising its heritage value. The inscription of World Heritage title comes with positive and negative implication. It has brought many benefits in terms of social development, economic development, and international recognition.
Along with the Heritage built form within the cities, waterfronts reflects a dynamic natural resources with special characteristics and regarded as the most important factors that influence the growth and the image of the cities and had a significant impact on urbanization and modernization of the most cities.
When cities faces both the situation simultaneously it becomes difficult to balance the modern development which is happening within the cities and the heritage values it has in the traditional core of the cities. There is a need to develop the relation between the new developments which is implanted in the heritage city. The interface between them should be made in such a way that it should blend with the traditional characteristic of the city, keeping in mind the kind of new developments which has been proposed or implemented.
This study will look into the case of Ahmedabad, which recently got the World Heritage title. The development which has been proposed along the Sabarmati riverfront is not responding to the existing fabric of the city they are haphazardly implanted within the core area of the city. And because of this the old core area is getting transformed and the traditional typologies and character of the old area is getting commercialized without considering the traditional character it has.
As it’s a World Heritage city on one edge of the river and on the other hand there is new development proposed, there is a need of symbiosis relation between the Heritage city and the Sabarmati Riverfront because it had a direct impact on the image and identity of the city. In order to ensure that new development should not come as a surprising element within the city, there is a need to study the adjacent historic built form. As the traditional built heritage is rich in architecture elements, which can incorporated in new development. Since the relation with the river during time has transformed, it has been disconnected with the tradition built fabric. So there is a need to rethink on the connection with the World heritage site and the river. And blending of Historic site and new development in terms of spatially, visually and architecturally is required.
