Abstract:
As a piece of art and history, a building is unique because of the implied
permanent attachment to the land and its status as a landmark. A building is both
a permanent and a changeable record of history. The conservation of the cultural
property of a city includes anything related with the city‘s heritage so this study
focuses on the conservation of historical monument of Gwalior city. Gwalior, an
important city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is the regional centre for
administration, service, commerce, industries, education, social, culture, tourism,
music and arts. The city of Gwalior is composed of three sub-cities namely Old
Gwalior towards the north,Lashkar towards the south and the Morar Cantonment
towards the east. The expanding urban fabric now joins the three cities. The
undulating landscape is dotted with hilly outcrops, but none as high and as
imposing as the Fort hill. The city has a rich tradition of talented like poets,
musicians, sculptors and saints, this multi faceted character is reflected in the
architecture and landscape of the historic city. Maharaj madhav rao scindia- 1
initiated the Gwalior development plans. These included forming of a center of
administration and, commerce the hub of the city, the gorkhi bada. The famous
buildings of this square include Victoria memorial market. The foundation stone
of Victoria market was lead by H.R.H Duke Of Connaught in 1903 and the market
was opened by the king emperor George pancham in 1905. The Victoria was
basically constructed for British officer for their daily needs of goods. Today
Victoria market has undergone many stages of transformation since from the
beginning, which show the glory of city and important urban centre of modern
times. The thesis is aim to revive the importance of Victoria market through
sustainable adaptive reuse. General site observation and Exploration that is
identification and documentation of the Victoria market. Analysis the surrounding
context and behavior of the location. the completion of project includes
preparation of Guidelines and principle for conservation and adaptive reuse of
Victoria market through Conservation plan, historical plan, documentation,
Planning Strategies.
