Abstract:
India is full of very different examples of architectural styles. The architectural styles which very influential, ruler, material, labor/skill and climate dominant. In place like India the character or the style of architecture is defined by the king or the era in which it is built or according to the use of the building. But the question arises what is the exact method or the check list for defining an architectural. In any period there are many buildings that are constructed and many structures are rebuilt but only some are there which signifies the style and become signature of the place. The Taj Mahal of Agra is prominent example of Shahjahani (work done by Mughal king Shahajhan ). The architectural style of place or period are dependent upon several factors and in this paper I will be discussing about these factors taking an example of Farukhi era in Burhanpur the capital city of Khandesh. Farukhi rule
(1399A.D.-1601A.D.) comes before the Mughal king Akbar comes to the capital in 1601A.D. during his last years of rule. The paper states about what are that makes an architecture style, a structure and architectural characteristic.
The volumetric ratio and areal ratios’ are the first step to define any architectural style. In this thesis I have looked on the proportions of the mosques of Burhanpur built during Farukhi rule. For the areal analysis the thesis mainly looks in the ratios of plan form, elevational ratios. For the volumetric analysis, the ratio between plan and elevation, ratio of architectural elements like arches of prayer hall and arches of mehrab and other openings.
Next step for analyzing the architectural style is to analyzing the components of a mosque as architectural components in either the plan form or elevation and section of them. Analyzing architectural components with respect other mosques (by looking in the components of the plans, components of elevation, joinery details, material used, heights or levels etc.).Third step is to analyze the structural elements and how the structure is formed. Analyzing the load transferred of the structure and what all are the structural components forming the structural system. The future expansion of the thesis is to look at how the brick and stone are used and there amalgam together.
