Abstract:
This research paper focuses on the neglect of heritage structures in the city of Lucknow, and proposes a solution to preserve the heritage by integrating a contemporary significant community with them. The study was initiated as a consequence of observation of the current unfortunate state of historic structures in India, and their lack of upkeep. The study finds why, where and how this happens, and aims to provide a healthy way of preserving urban heritage whilst improving the urban fabric of the city simultaneously. It is found that adaptive reuse is a strategy that is capable of successfully altering this aforementioned urban fabric. Thorough study of adaptive reuse and its types, methods and implications have been done through literature. It was also found that the weaves and crafts artisan community in the city is in need of a space to formally carry out their daily work. The study further sees whether or not the community may be accommodated in a neglected heritage building in the city of Lucknow. This research can further be extended to other communities and heritage buildings, so as to eventually restore most underutilized heritage buildings in India and reinvigorate the heritage core in a historic city.
