Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to create a facility that may act as an interface between informal urban village - Lado
Sarai and larger fabric of city of Delhi. Many spaces in the city development lie barren and in derelict condition.
Such spaces can be revitalised, not just for commercial value, but to reconnect to the city and benefit several
stakeholders. The process of thesis involved constant zooming in and out and working at various scalesdrawing cues from immediate context as well as at city level.
The site, covering an area of 19,500 sqmt, is located at the fringe of a lal dora region- Lado Sarai. The precinct
has an eventful historical trajectory that dates to 15th century. It sits in a historically significant area, with
Qutub Complex and Qila Rai Pithora Fort in the vicinity. Along with that, site is surrounded by ecologically
sensitive areas like Sanjay Van and Qila Rai Pithora Park.
Furthermore, site is well connected to Metro line and prominent bus stops. For people walking from Saket
Metro Station (650m away) to Lado Sarai, the site acts as a prominent junction. It also draws attention of the
passers-by travelling between South Delhi and Airport, as well as Gurugram. This give the opportunity to
visualise the site as an active public place, catering to large spectrum of people and integrating many activities
that are currently functioning in disjunction.
Most of the urban Villages in Delhi have adapted to acquire a distinctive characteristic, depending on their
proximity to prominent institutions. Such places majorly draw Indian designers, looking for an alternative to
westernised shopping malls. The high-end commercial street of Lado Sarai is dominated by several Art
Galleries, Furniture Shops, Architecture, and Interior Designer firms.
Another interesting typology that has emerged in the precinct are the various Libraries, that the author has
classified as co-studying areas. These areas offer a fixed desk seat, 24/7 access, wifi and Air conditioning which
their hostel accommodation lacks.
A project with multiple function and heterogeneous character to activate the space. The multiplicity in terms
of need, response and design is brought into the design program that shall benefit the residents of Lado Sarai
as well and the visitors. Hence create a common interface for all.
The core concept is how architecture can act as the interface between the urban village and the larger city
fabric and act as a catalyst for the revitalisation of the site- translating it into a space. The essence is to bring
together whole spectrum of people belonging to different creative fields and social classes. Different skills
they possess, imbibes the inter-disciplinary practice. Additionally, becoming an interface between
Recreational, communal and commercial activities, through inclusion of various programs and functions. It
sits at the intersection of Social and Economic needs that creates a space for interactions that may lead to
innovation, creativity, and construct & manifestation of cultures.
This may lead to exchange of experience & knowledge between various groups, resulting in blurring the
boundaries between various social classes.
