Abstract:
As the city of Gwalior is selected as a smart city in the second round of the selection. Various projects are proposed to make the city more liveable and advanced. One of the projects which is Gwalior Habitat and Trade Centre is also proposed in the old part of the city (Lashkar) to bring people of different professions to one place. The GHTC is conceived to provide an integrated physical environment which would serve as a catalyst for a synergetic relationship between various professions and institutions dealing with different facets of habitat by functioning and interacting in a coordinated manner. The campus includes a variety of building typologies to
fulfil this and one of the major requirements of the project is to provide housing covering a variety of income groups. The aim of the thesis is to design the housing complex which focuses on social interactions of the dwellers with design solutions not rigid to a typology but responsive to the site and the user. To provide a mixed dwelling unit typology to each building for better intergenerational interaction. To amalgamate the heritage aspect and values from the historical structure the city contains as the current housing lacks a contextual set-up. To provide a reasonable space distribution and design applications according to the shape of the site to merge to built form with its surroundings. To contain the principle of privacy and personal space. The site is located at the periphery of the older part of the city. The site comes under the area-based development program of smart city, Gwalior. The present site condition includes the development of the office Zone with the demarcation of the conventional and housing areas. The site is provided with dense vegetation and simultaneously with red soil, mainly which is suitable to the foundation of the built-form. The area in which the site is located is contained with a diversity of land-use near-by.
