Abstract:
The city of Imphal is growing rapidly and the construction of new houses has increased rapidly in the city. The people are constantly starting to buy lands at the periphery of the city as they are very cheap and are building their own houses to live in, and the connectivity to the city center is just a couple of minutes from the periphery. The houses which are widely seen constructed are such that the passive design part is neglected and people feel that the thermal uncomfortness inside their house is normal. The interactive and lively atmosphere is deteriorating in the peri-urban and urban area of the city due to the unplanned new settlements where there are no proper community amenities and thus the sense of community is seldom present. People are also very much attached to the traditional way of owning their own land. And the people who are migrating from small towns and villages are used to having public amenities and spaces in the rural area. With all these conditions the need for housing with a sense of community and passive design is very much necessary currently. Through my design, I have tried to incorporate climate-responsive passive design, traditional guidelines, community atmosphere, and modern touch. So these are the main factors guiding my design process. It is human nature to want new things and changes. I try to design a traditional house that takes care of the modern needs and design. Through my design, I have tried to embed the old traditional guidelines which people are attached to, and presented in a modern way implementing passive design forms and also adding present-day community amenities. I have also tried to bring the interactive and lively nature of a rural community to the new housing community through the spatial organization of community spaces.
