Abstract:
“We all can be dancers as long as we can develop an exquisite consciousness of our bodily experiences and movement in space……current day approaches in design pedagogy focus on personal and bodily experiences of the subject and the need for investigating new ways and methods to enhance awareness of spatial experiences is inevitable”- Zehra Ersoy, Architect, said in her dance and architecture workshop called ‘Building Dancing’. Dance is a mode of entertainment, therapy, spirituality etc. Depending on the generations and their limitations, it is perceived as a means of entertainment as well as physical exercise. But can dance act as a bridge between the generations to promote Intergenerational Relationship? A number of Classical and Folk Dance Studios all around the country is purely responsible for enhancing the culture of the country. Besides, fitness Dance Studios take the responsibility of the health. Dance Therapy being a part of health and mental fitness needs to flourish more in the country. The country has several Dance Therapy Studios for senior citizens though. The combination of these two different studios within the same boundary not only promotes cultural aspects but also social interactions. When a space experiences influx of a combination of different generations together, it leads to strengthening of Intergenerational Relationship through interactions.
The literature study provides details on how architecture can be linked to the various dance forms as well as comfort of different generation and thus can be transformed to design through various identified architectural parameters. For case study, 4 projects were considered to understand the art and cultural facilities and design of intergenerational projects. The design is based on different approaches of dance, such as, rotation, repetition, rhythm etc. Also depending on the needs of different generations, the forms are modified and elements are added.
